Mumbai: Dheeraj Kumar's Om Namah Shivay made a comeback on the small screen after 21 long years amid the nationwide lockdown. While viewers have been hooked to the show and the characters, especially to Samar Jai Singh (who played Lord Shiva) and Gayatri Shastri (Parvati), little do they know that the latter couldn't speak Hindi at all before being a part of the show.
Kumar revealed that Gayatri was from Chennai and she had to learn the Hindi language from scratch after being chosen to play Parvati in Om Namah Shivay. He said, 'The casting was very challenging for Om Namah ShivayPart because of the number of characters we had on the show. For the character of Parvati, we needed a girl who looks like a 'Devi', who was a skilled dancer and had a very fresh and energetic look about her. We got all of that in Gayatri. She was perfect. The only problem? She could not speak a word of Hindi! She is Tamilian. She had a completely different way of talking, and here was a show that used chaste Hindi.'

Dheeraj Kumar: It took us nine long years of research to create Om Namah Shivay

Episode
Mythological show Om Namah Shivay, which originally aired from 1997 to 1999, will make a comeback from June 18. The show that featured Samar Jai Singh as Shiva, Yashodhan Rana as Kama/Shiva, Gayatri Shashtri as Shakti/ Parvati and Manjeet Kullar as Shakti / Sati, among others took around nine years of research before work started on shooting and renowned scholars and writers were consulted for the show.

He added, 'But she was extremely diligent. She told me to give her time. She told me, ‘Sir, you can start shooting and dub my voice, but I promise you I will learn Hindi’. I agreed because she was a very dedicated actress. We relocated her from Chennai to Mumbai where she stayed with her mother. And let me tell you, within a few weeks, she learned Hindi to a great extent. For a Tamilian to learn Hindi is no easy task, so I was really amazed.'
Earlier, Kumar had revealed how the show took nine years of research and preparation before finally kickstarting the shoot. He had also said that renowned scholars and writers were consulted for the show which revolves around the tales of Lord Shiva and his divine powers.

Cast of Ramayan talks about behind-the-scenes moments from the iconic show

The never-told-before stories from the sets of Ramayan

The cast of Ramayan recently interacted with the media via an online press conference and revealed several moments and stories that went on behind making the iconic show. Directed by Ramanand Sagar, Ramayan starred Arun Govil as Ram, Dipika Chikhlia as Sita, Sunil Lahri as Laxman and Arvind Trivedi as Ravan. The show, which has returned on the small screen in the lockdown after 33 years, has been a hit among the masses and has also notched up several records to its credit.

When tribals sought Arun Govil's blessings

Om namah shivaya serial part 13

Ramanand Sagar's son, Prem Sagar, who was also a part of the crew of Ramayan, revealed that while they were shooting in a place called Umbergaon, there were many tribals living in the region and they would bring their newborn babies to seek blessings from Arun Govil aka Lord Ram. They would place their babies at his feet and ask him to bless them as they looked at him not as an actor but as Lord Ram himself.

A unique way of gathering junior artistes

Prem Sagar also said that since Ramayan was the first mythological show to be ever made, it was very difficult for them to get junior and supporting artistes for the show. 'We had assigned few people to go banging drums around nearby villages and make an announcement that whoever comes on the set will get food and money,' he said.

An actor who played three roles in the same show

A junior artiste named Aslam Khan had essayed three different roles -- Samudra Dev, a saint and a member of the Vaanar Sena -- on the show. Speaking of it, Sagar said that junior artistes were repeated because of financial constraints. He said that the director had hired a bunch of artistes and would pay them on a monthly basis. 'We would try to make each character look as different as possible with the help of makeup,' he said.

Most challenging part while shooting Ramayan

Sagar said that one of the most challenging things that went on behind the show was to retain the credibility and spirituality of the epic. 'There are many stories which are not there in the original Ramayan but in the other versions of the Ramayan including Urdu and Persian versions. Picking up lesser-known stories from these versions was one of the major challenges,' he said.

Challenges faced by the cast

Om Namah Shivaya Serial Part 11

Dipika revealed that they would shoot late in the night and would sleep in the day, due to which their entire sleep cycle had changed. She also said that it was very difficult shooting in the heat with heavy jewellery and costumes. 'I am allergic to artificial jewellery so I had blood and pus around my ears. During monsoon, snakes had entered Sunil Lahri's room. But, we eventually overcame these challenges and functioned smoothly for over three years,' she said.

When Ramanand Sagar faced court cases for 10 years

Dipika revealed that because of certain scenes related to Sita, the director had to face court cases for several years. 'Because of his respect for women, he took liberty in showing a few things. He told the government that he won't make Uttar Ramayan because he could not agree that a person like Ram can throw his wife out. He had clearly told them he will only do it till Ram Rajya and won't do after Uttar Kand. He didn't even call it Uttar Kand, he called it Uttar Ramayan. Ramanand Sagar left the decision with Sita whether to leave Ram or stay with him, and she left. So not only did he save Ram's image but also gave more power to Sita to take her own decisions in Uttar Ramayan. But, due to all this, he had to face court cases in Allahabad for 10 years,' she said.

Om Namah Shivay is one of the famous serial even now it has magic on its viewers. It is a complete Shiv Puran. It is true & accurated show. It was made after 8 years of research by Dheeraj kumar with the help of Research center Madhusudan pathak. Also,it is an Indian-Television series based on HinduPuranic tales and stories of Lord Shiva. The series is presumably named after the mantraAum Namah Shivaya. It 'depicts the spirituality, divinity, and the moving power with which Lord Shiva governs the destiny of the universe.'

Plot[edit]

The plot centers around Lord Shiva and brings Hindu theology to life in a series of interconnected stories. The serial begins with the creation of the universe and the other Devas, then guides the viewer through Shiva's marriage to Sati, Sati's death, Shiva's marriage to Parvati, and tales of many devotional acts, demonic battles, and important religious events (such as the creation of the twelve Jyotirlinga). It ends with events covered in the Mahābhārata and the blessing of the hero Arjuna by Shiva.

According to the show's introduce the material used to construct the show's plot and the script was extensive. Sources listed are the Vayu Puran, Shiv Maha Puran, Skand Puran, Ling Puran, Tantra Chooramani, Valmiki Ramayan, Swetashwar Upanishad, Vaman Puran, Varah Puran, Koorma Puran, Rudra Yamal Tantra, Padma Puran, Devi Bhagwat Puran, and Bhagwat Puran. Director Dheeraj Kumar, a devotee of Lord Shiva, oversaw nine years of research to ensure that Om Namah Shivay's story was complete and accurate;[3] nonetheless, the opening credits begin with an apology for any errors that may have been made in the series.

Kumar has also stated that, besides depicting stories central to the Hindu faith, every episode of the serial 'contains certain portions which highlight the cultural heritage of India.'[4]

Soundtrack[edit]

Songs from many well-known Indian singers are featured in this serial; a few examples include the title song 'Om Namah Shivay' (Pandit Jasraj), 'Rudra Rudra' (Vinod Rathod and Udit Narayan, episode 53), and 'Trikal Darsh' (episode 89), 'Man Mein Ek Kamna' (episode 62), and 'Maha Shivratri Aayi' (Alka Yagnik). A contemporary article states that 'Jasraj's son, Sharang Dev, has provided music' and that 'almost every singer of Bollywood, Lata Mangeshkar included, has sung for the serial.'[4]

Unity is created in the series by using the same songs for different scenes, or even the same melodies with different lyrics, to soundtrack a recurring theme or situation. For example, the creation of each Jyotirling is accompanied by a chorus of the song 'Ajar Amar Shiv Shankar.' 'Dharm Na Janu,' sung by the boy Upmanyyu in episode 58, later becomes the melody for the song 'Jeevan Kya Hai,' which the young Markandeya sings in episode 168; each child sings to seek Shiva's protection through prayer. Indra, Narada, and the Devatas sing 'Om Shri Tripund Dhari' to ask rescue from Shiva in episode 56; Sachi then sings the same melody as a prayer to Shakti, 'Jai Shakti Dayini Maa,' in episode 100.

Continuity is also created between different performers with music. For instance, the song 'Maha Shivratri Aayi' is sung by Shiva's first wife Sati, and then by his second wife Parvati, both celebrating the great festival of Maha Shivaratri.

Broadcast[edit]

Om Namah Shivay was running in parallel with another TV series called Shiv Mahapuran which was based on the same topic. Shiv Mahapuran was created by Gulshan Kumar from T-Series. Both the shows used to telecast on Doordarshan. However, while Om Namah Shivay was shown on DD-National channel, Shiv Mahapuran was telecast on DD-Metro channel. Sometimes, both use to run the same track parallelly.

Yashodhan Rana and Gayatri Shastri - the second actor to play Shiva, and Parvati, respectively - became engaged in 1999.[6] They married in 2001 and divorced in April 2010.[7]

Home video[edit]

In 2003, Om Namah Shivay was released as a two-part, 42-DVD set, distributed by Madhu Entertainment and Media. It includes an option for English subtitles and a choice of four languages for audio (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam). The DVD insert explains more about the series' creation and purpose:'There is no one character in world history...which has influenced people so great and made them culturally rich as Shiva. The name of Lord Shiva is unique in each and every respect. The TV serial Om Namah Shivay is gratitude shown to this God of Gods called Shiva. A great effort is put to make this serial an unforgettable experience in every Indian's life.'
